Visa and travel permits

The cheapest way to get a passport is through the local Eritrean embassy. This is often successful, but it is time consuming. You need at least one month, but in some cases it can take several months, depending on the embassy. Unfortunately there aren’t too many embassies around and mostly  in countries with a significant Eritrean population. You can also risk sending your passport and application form to the closest embassy abroad. But that means you’ll be without a passport during that time and there is always a small chance your envelope gets lost in the mail. Prices  vary according to your nationality. It’s best to contact your nearest embassy to find out more information. Note that while some embassies can be helpful others are notorious for not giving any information by phone, which is really frustrating. In those cases, or if there is no embassy in your country, or if you just want to speed up the process, it’s best to work with a travel agency.

Hereby is a list of all the embassies, note that not all of them supply visas!

Getting a tourist visa on arrival through a travel agency

The easiest way to get a visa if there isn’t an embassy closeby is getting a visa on arrival. It is quite fast, but at a higher price. Processing the visa on arrival takes about 1 up to 2 weeks and a tour has to be booked as well. Don’t forget that you still have to pay for your visa at the airport. You will have to bring dollars with you to pay.
Once you arrive at the airport with your paper the process is pretty quick and takes around 30 – 40 minutes.
