FIL FIL AND THE GREEN BELT

Eritrea still has a small pocket of rainforest left, called Filfil Rainforest or the Green Belt of Eritrea. This is the most northerly rainforest in all of Africa and is located between 700 and 2.000 m above sea level. We find deciduous trees as well as olive and cedar trees. The area has a microclimate and gets 5 to 7 months of wet weather every year from October to February and from April to May. You can go from either Massawa or Asmara in one day by car and you’ll be rewarded by amazing views while traveling to the forest. There are several stops of interest such as Mogo, Sabur, Medhanit (which also has a small hotel and restaurant) and the villages of Fil Fil and Ghatelai. The area is excellent for birdwatching, but there are also antelopes such as kudu, bushbuck, klipspringer as well as warthogs and leopards.

Your trip will start from either Asmara or Massawa and we’ll show you several points of interest in the area. Bring plenty of water, packed lunch and good hiking shoes.
