ELABERED EXPLORATION: FARMING COMMUNITIES AND DEBRE SINA MONASTERY

The Elabered region is an agricultural center with citrus fruits, tomatoes among others and large herds of cows. The state farm is irrigated by large reservoirs which also supply water to the town of Ieden, close to the monastery of Debre Sina, where the first Holy Communion in the Eritrean Orthodox Church was prepared in the 4th century. It is one of the oldest monasteries in the world, probably built in the third century and home to a yearly pilgrimage in June attracting thousands of pilgrims.

Today we’ll hike among the farm and the plantations and we’ll discover Ieden’s small center with its church and we’ll have a stroll among the fruit plantations and the small communities in the area. We’ll tell you all about how the fruits and vegetables are grown and life in the communities of this beautiful charming area. We’ll also have a visit to the Debre Sina Monastery where the residents will happily tell you more about life at the site.
